Titanium Grade 9 Tube for Aerospace Hydraulic Lines
When an aircraft hydraulic line fails, there is no pull-over to the shoulder. The tubing has to be light enough not to penalize payload, strong enough to hold high pressure for decades, and corrosion-proof against everything from salt-laden coastal air to hydraulic fluid itself. For many airframers and MRO buyers, Klasse 9 Titan-Rohr (Ti-3Al-2.5V) is the quiet workhorse that meets all three at once.
What Is Grade 9 Titanium (Ti-3Al-2.5V)?
Grade 9 — UNS R56320 — is a near-alpha titanium alloy with roughly 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium. It sits in a sweet spot: about 20–50% stronger than commercially pure (CP) Grade 2, yet far easier to cold-form and weld than the high-strength Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). That combination is exactly what hydraulic and pneumatic tubing need. For a deeper look at the alloy itself, see our Grade 9 titanium property guide.
Typical Specifications for Grade 9 Hydraulic Tubing
The values below are typical reference ranges for aerospace-grade Ti-3Al-2.5V tubing. Always confirm against the ordered specification and the supplied mill test report.
| Property / Item | Typical Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| UNS / Grade | R56320 / Grade 9 | Ti-3Al-2,5V |
| Density | 4.48 g/cm³ | ~60% of steel’s weight |
| Tensile strength (min) | 620 MPa (90 ksi) | Reference, annealed |
| Yield strength (min) | 483 MPa (70 ksi) | Reference, annealed |
| Elongation (min) | ≥ 15% | Good ductility |
| Common standards | ASTM B861, B338; AMS 4943 / 4944 | Seamless & hydraulic tubing specs |
| Typical sizes | OD 3–50 mm; wall 0.5–3 mm | Custom per drawing |
| Surface / test | Pickled or bright annealed; eddy-current tested | 100% ET on seamless tube |
Grade 9 vs Grade 2 vs Grade 5 for Hydraulic Lines
| Factor | Grade 2 (CP Ti) | Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V) | Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | Low | Medium–high | Highest |
| Formability / weldability | Ausgezeichnet | Very good | Difficult |
| Weight penalty | Low | Low | Low (but costlier) |
| Best fit for hydraulics | Low-pressure service | Balanced & most common | Over-spec for most lines |
In short: Grade 2 is cheapest but limits pressure rating; Grade 5 is stronger but harder and more expensive to form; Grade 9 is the balanced default for aircraft hydraulic and pneumatic lines.
What a Buyer Should Verify Before Ordering
Hydraulic tubing lives or dies on consistency. Before you commit, check: an EN 10204 3.1 mill test report with chemistry and mechanicals, PMI / positive material identification, eddy-current or UT testing on seamless stock, and tight OD/wall tolerances from end to end. Our titanium tube & pipe overview covers the forms and standards we handle.
Why Source Through a China Titanium Partner
As a trading company, our job is to de-risk your buy: we consolidate qualified mills, enforce incoming QC (PMI, UT/ET, EN 10204 3.1), keep MOQs flexible for prototype-to-production runs, and give you transparent lead times instead of vague promises. For aerospace programs specifically, see our Rohre aus Titanlegierungen für Luft- und Raumfahrtanwendungen page.
