Buying titanium from China can unlock strong pricing and an unmatched range of grades and forms — but it also brings real risks: quality that varies between mills, unclear certifications, minimum order quantities that tie up capital, and slow or vague communication. As a China-based titanium trading company, we see every week where buyers get burned. Here is how to choose a supplier that actually protects your project.
Before contacting any supplier, nail down: grade — for example Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) or Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V) — form such as titanium tube or titanium bar, standard (ASTM B338 / B348 / B265 / B381, AMS 4928…), condition, tolerances and NDE level. A supplier who asks these questions up front is already a safer bet than one who quotes instantly with no questions.
Require an EN 10204 3.1 mill test report with every batch, and verify chemical composition and mechanical properties against the ordered standard. Our guide to titanium tube inspection & testing explains the NDE steps buyers should expect. Look for ISO 9001 at minimum; AS9100 for aerospace and relevant medical certs for implants. Be wary of suppliers who only “can provide a certificate” after you press them — ask for a sample MTC before you commit.
Real quality control means Positive Material Identification (PMI), UT/PT for critical parts, and dimensional inspection. Ask what is included versus charged extra. A small per-kg saving vanishes fast if a batch is downgraded, rejected, or fails incoming inspection at your plant.
Mills often impose high MOQs per item. A trading partner can consolidate bar + plate + small parts into one shipment, share MOQ across items, and hold buffer stock — directly cutting the working capital you have tied up.
Demand a committed schedule with milestones, not “around four weeks.” Understand whether material is in stock, on a rolling schedule, or made to order — each carries a very different risk profile.
Clear English communication, correct HS codes, complete export documents, seaworthy/airworthy packing, and a single accountable contact remove most of the surprises that derail shipments.
